Visllisla

Visllisla, is a settlement located in the north of Chiloé Island.

Town

The current extent of Visllisla is centered around a small pond on which all the population currently lives. As well as where the town center is located.

One notable feature of the town is the large house on the pond built by some of the first settlers of Visllisla. Across the street from this house lie multiple fields used mainly to grow grain and potatoes.

Multiple roads extend from the center of town, leading through the surrounding forest, including to the coast and to a large wood plantation to the north.

History

February 27th, 3026

In late February, an expedition of 24 people from the east coast of the former United States arrived on Chiloé Island. The expedition decided to settle at a pond in the northeast of the island. After initially settling, Visllisla ran into a shortage of wood due to poor allocation of materials by the inexperienced colonist. The shortage limited their ability to construct housing and expand. To solve this, the northeast of the colony was designated as a lumber-gathering area.

In mid-March, Visllisla celebrated reaching over 144 inhabitants (they use base-12 numbers). The town celebrated this milestone by consuming a single lime. Limes are a ceremonial fruit in Visllislid culture and are only used on special occasions due to only 4 limes surviving the journey from North America.

Culture and Government

The 24 founders of Visllisla all spoke a North American dialect of English that had evolved during the thousand years of isolation underground. However, one of the first local Spanish-speaking colonists suggested the name Visllisla. The name Visllisla roughly comes from the words "vista" and "isla," reflecting the vision and ideas for the future that the settlers brought with them to the island. The inhabitants of Visllisla aim to preserve the natural languages and create a common language spoken among Visllislids.

Visllislid culture has many oddities. The early settlers of the town decided to use this as an opportunity to try to implement their own cultural and societal changes. One of these oddities is the adoption of a base 12 number system. When some settlers left to found Punta Aca, they carried most of the cultural and governmental aspects of Visllisla with them.

Visllisla has a minimalistic government whose ruling document is a constitution that is heavily based on the ideas of negative rights and private property. The constitution holds primary power in determining the rule of law; below that is an elected group whose job it is to uphold the constitution and manage foreign relations. Other laws and issues not covered by the constitution are decided by popular vote.

Demographics

Visllisla is home to 1107 human and about 200 dog Visllislids currently living in a mix of row houses and more suburban-style homes. People currently speak both versions of English and Spanish, which evolved in the time since the great calamity. The population has been growing due to some more settlers arriving from North America after hearing of the success of the first expedition, along with various more locals coming from shelters in the Andes, looking to resettle on the surface.
